Is Reading Eggs worth it?
A year ago we tried out a free month trial of Reading Eggs. My daughter enjoyed the app so much, that soon after she turned 4, we decided to go ahead and buy a year’s subscription to both Reading Eggs and Mathseeds.
My daughter has been using the app for almost a year now. Today I’ll share all about what Reading Eggs is, what’s included, and if we would recommend it! Then, you’ll know if the app is going to be a good fit for you too.
What Is Reading Eggs?
Reading Eggs is an online learning app that has 5 different educational programs for different age groups. There are four reading programs and one math program.
The app has a lot of different fun and interactive learning games that teach phonics and literacy skills.
Reading Eggs also includes:
- A library of over 2000 online books
- Fun videos
- Free activity worksheets to go along with each lesson
- Rewards for completing each level
- Physical books available for purchase that go with the online learning
ABC Reading Eggs has 5 educational programs:
- Reading Eggs Junior (Ages 2-4)
- Reading Eggs (ages 3-7)
- Fast Phonics (Ages 5-10)
- Reading Eggspress (ages 7-13)
- Mathseeds (Ages 3-9)
How Does Reading Eggs Work?
The main Reading Eggs program is divided into 12 maps, and each map has 10 lessons. So, there are 120 lessons altogether.
Each lesson has around 10 learning games to complete. When completing a lesson, the child reads an online book. and then is able to watch a short video of a new creature hatching out of an egg. Each lesson a different creature hatches out, and this is their reward for completing the lesson.
One lesson takes around 20-30 minutes to complete.
The other programs are structured differently and have differing amounts of lessons:
- Fast Phonics has 13 peaks
- Reading Eggspress includes grades 1-6 and has 220 lessons
- Mathseeds has 40 maps and 200 lessons
We have also been using the Mathseeds program, which I will write a post about soon!
When kids start Reading Eggs they can take a placement quiz to ensure they start at an appropriate level.

The phonics sheets are especially great for teaching little ones how to write.
The activity sheets for each program differ, but focus on phonics, handwriting, spelling, reading comprehension, and so on.
Here’s what the Reading Eggs activity sheets look like for one lesson (lesson 86):
2. Online Library

Reading Eggs Review
My daughter has loved this app from day one. This is the only online learning tool we use right now, so she loves having a break from her bookwork to complete the online games within the app.
The games are so fun that she doesn’t even realize she is ‘doing school’! There are so many fun learning activities to complete.
The only drawback for us is that occasionally we can come across a game that seems exceptionally hard and does not seem to go with the other games on that level. When this happens, I just give her a bit of help and she can continue on with the next activity.
However, other than this, I don’t have anything negative to say about the app! She can complete the games herself, and I just hang out near her in case she has any questions.
Because we homeschool our children, we use the app as extra reading and math practice alongside my daughter’s main workbooks and curriculum (we have loved using ‘Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons!‘).
My daughter has improved so much with her reading and now reads books out loud to herself in bed at night!
Remember, you don’t have to be a homeschooler to use Reading Eggs! Even if your child attends school, they can get some extra practice in by using the app, especially if they are struggling in math or reading.
We absolutely love this app, and are sure you will too! Try out a month’s free trial of Reading Eggs and see for yourself!
